Roman Fuller and the Decatur Eagles opened up district play by defeating the Wichita Falls Hirschi Huskies, 40-28 on Friday night. In a game that featured 3 lead changes, it was the Eagles who were able to capitalize and make the Huskies pay for committing 3 turnovers.
A bad snap on a Husky punt attempt set the Eagles up for their first score. Gunner Ragsdale would score from 6 yards out to make it 7-0 Eagles on their first drive of the game. After 2 stalled drives, the Huskies would get on the board towards the end of the first quarter when Stavonte Vaughn would score from 15 yards out to tie it up.
The first quarter would end in a 7-7 stalemate. But two plays into the second quarter, Fuller would go up top to Chase Oberle on a fade route to make it 14-7 Eagles. The Huskies would soon come right back and even it up at 14 after Tryston Randall found Jevione Livingston for a pitch and catch for a touchdown. Chris Murray and the Husky defense would come up with a big 4th down stop on the Eagles’ next offensive series before Randall and company would go right back to work. Randall and the Husky offense would face a 4th down of their own before Fred Fleeks would find Desmond Sanders for a 16 yard score on a halfback pass to hand them their first lead of the night at 21-14.
The Huskies would take that lead into halftime but, Fuller and the Eagles would come out with authority to start the third quarter.
AJ Martinez would give the Eagles their second touchdown of the night on the ground to tie it up at 21 on their opening drive of the second half. The defenses would briefly come alive on both sides as the fourth quarter would start with that same score. But Gunner Ragsdale would give the Eagles a 27-21 lead on the first play of the quarter. The Husky offense would move down the field swiftly and regain the lead at 28-27 on the ensuing drive, thanks to Fleeks scoring on a 6 yard run with 10:20 left in the game.
That would be the Huskies final score of the night as the Eagles would turn it up on defense.
The Eagle defense would share that momentum with their offense as Fuller would find Layton Harris on back to back scoring drives to make it 40-28 Eagles. The Huskies would threaten to score once more. But a big 4th down stop by the Eagles would crush their hopes of coming back with a turnover on downs.
Decatur (6-0 overall, 1-0 district) will hope to continue it’s winning ways as they host fellow unbeaten Springtown next Friday. That same night, Wichita Falls Hirschi (3-2 overall, 0-1 district) will hope to get back in the win column as they travel to unbeaten Gainesville. Both games are scheduled to kickoff at 7PM.
