Los Fresnos and their Sensational Freshman Gerry Martinez

The Los Fresnos High School Basketball program is an incredible 144-34 in the past five seasons. That’s a winning percentage of nearly 81% whilst on average winning 29 games a season. However, from 2015-2019 they failed to make it out of the area round of the state playoffs. That all changed in the 2019-2020 season as the Falcons of Los Fresnos with a 62-49 win over Vela, are now sitting at an unprecedented 33-3 record and a spot in the sweet 16 for the first time in program history.

One big reason for all that success? Freshman sensation, Gerry Martinez.

Gerry Martinez is the leading scorer for the Falcons with nearly 17 points per game on 33% shooting from three-point range on the year.

“I work my hardest in practice and I go with my dad to get extra shots up after practicing,” Martinez said on his success.

The Freshman star also puts up three rebounds, two assists and two and a half steals per game en route to the Falcons most successful season yet.

“Our coaches getting us prepared and having a game plan for us every game,” Martinez said on his teams’ success.

Los Fresnos started the year off hot winning their first 11 games before falling to Sharyland Pioneer. They responded to that loss by stringing together nine more wins to sit at an impressive 20-1. On January 10th and 11th though, Los Fresnos dropped back to back games to Cole and Antonian Prep by 12 and 22 respectively.

Since then, a 13 game streak of undefeated basketball. Since those back to back losses, Los Fresnos is putting up 67 points a game whilst only allowing 43. The Falcons in the past 13 games are winning by an average of 24 points a game.

In that timeframe as well, Martinez has been averaging 19 points and three steals a game, both above his season averages. Martinez, even on a team with eight seniors, has risen to the occasion in the playoffs as well as he has led the Falcons in scoring in each of the teams’ first three games with 16,22 and 16 respectively.

The Falcons and Martinez find themselves not only over the second-round hump but also in the sweet 16 for the first time in program history.

“It feels amazing just to be part of this and contribute,” Martinez said.

The Falcons and Martinez in order to keep the dream season alive, have to take on 31-3 San Antonio Brandeis in the 4th round of the 6A state playoffs on Friday, March 6th.

In order to win it all though the Falcons will need a “full team effort and us going out on the court and giving it our all,” Martinez said.

Gerry Martinez, regardless of this season’s outcome, has an exciting career ahead of him. Fans of the Los Fresnos Falcons have a star in the making whom they’ll be able to cheer on for the next three years. Martinez though isn’t focused on the future.

“Right now we’re just worried about this year.”
