A shutdown corner in today’s game is pretty much a thing of the past due to the inflation of the passing game. It’s a new era and they just don’t hold the same weight like they used to. Not to mention, the recievers are just way too good, even some Tight Ends nowadays play like wideouts. In the 2019 NFL Draft, only one cornerback was selected in the first round and that wasn’t until the 30th pick. Picture a cornerback winning the Heisman or MVP honors – exactly, you can’t. Then there’s Denver Harris. Only a sophomore at North Shore High School, standing 6’2, he’s at the top of the list in the 2022 class. Great footwork, size, speed and one thing that plenty new generation defenders lack – ball skills! He doesn’t face guard and you won’t see his hand caught in the cookie jar. With me being an avid #txhsfb supporter, I’ve been to many games and have seen Harris run the route for the receiver. Very instinctive and fluent in the hips, you’ll rarely see him get beat off the release. If by chance he does, the kid have the makeup speed to recover. Denver currently runs a blazing 4.36 forty and was awarded a scholarship offer by Nick Saban of Alabama just shortly after his ninth grade year. The University of Tennessee was Harris’ first offer but now he’s sitting on 16+ letters with two years left in his high school career. Pretty insane! It would be very remiss of me not to give some credit to the defensive backs coach at North Shore, Theadis Reagins. I can name more than five players that Reagins coached that have either went on to play at the next level or will be doing so next fall. Look for Denver Harris to be next to branch out from Reagins’ coaching tree. Once the rankings come out this summer, I’m sure Denver will be a 5 star recruit. A growing teen that can cover the X, Y, slot and drop back in the safety zone will garner the attention of every major college out there. I firmly believe the 2022 standout can start for most NCAA programs right now.
