
Offensive MVP Colton Gonzales scored five TDs and rushed for 232 yards to lead Blum to the 1A Division I state title Wednesday at AT&T Stadium. Golzales scored his fifth TD with 58 seconds left to give Blum the 58-52 upset victory over defending state champion McLean.
After falling behind 14-0 early, Blum turned the game around with some timely defensive stops and turnovers. Blum got its first lead with 2:58 left in the first half when Gonzales scored his first TD to give the Bobcats a 24-22 lead.
Blum opened up a 46-30 lead with 35 seconds left in the third quarter, but defending state champion McLean rallied to tie the score at at 52-52 with 2:15 left in the game.
But Blum didn’t fold after McLean rallied late. The Bobcats needed just three plays to score the winning touchdown and claim the first state championship in school history. In addition to the 29-yard TD run, Gonzales had an 18 yard run and an 18 yard pass to Harley Martindale in the drive.
McLean’s Ben Crockett rushed for 227 yards and four TDs to lead McClean. Crockett also passed for 254 yards and three TDs.
